In this profession training is everything. Your life and the lives of those you serve will be preserved because you are trained to deliver high quality service. The first question you must ask is as follows: What is my developmental level? Self reflection is the key to your advancement. As a trainer, I see many people lying to themselves about their level of competence. People refusing to use self reflection to identify their training needs and then pursue them. Don’t blame the instructor or your supervisor for your lack of success.
Don’t get your competency or developmental level confused with your commitment. You attend class because you have a commitment for self improvement, but you lack the competence in your chosen field of study. Remember it is up to you to gain the insight you need to succeed. Self-study is vital to improving your competence. The more competent you are the better you can perform.
Competence is the quality or state of having sufficient knowledge, judgment, skill, or strength (as for a particular duty or in a particular respect). Your desire or enthusiasm to be good at your endeavors won’t work for you unless you devote yourself to a particular course of study to increase your knowledge.
We here at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad are committed to helping you raise your competency level. Bring us your enthusiasm and we will provide you training that will meet your needs. Come to the station on Drill Night which occurs every Monday. We are located at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road.
