Those Who Make Things Happen and Those That Complain

The Pioneers and the Settlers (In The Goldilocks Zone)

There are a lot of Pioneers in the Fire and Rescue Services that are criticized by those who are on the sidelines (Settlers) waiting for things to get done. These Settlers are not bad people, they just don’t have the talent to make things happen. You know who they are. They come into your home, complain about the chairs either being too soft or too hard. They complain about the food either being too hot or too cold. They complain about the beds either being too hard or too soft. We get that they want things to be just right but they don’t do their part to help make things just right.

To all the Settlers out there, and you know who you are, no one made things just right for the Pioneers. The Pioneers build the company, buy the apparatus, acquire the equipment, fix the facilities and work hard to make things just right. Pioneers have faced more dangerous things than the criticism of Settlers. Pioneers know the truth about the situation. They continue the work knowing the Settlers will always only be concerned about their comfort. So it comes down to perspective.

Pioneering is hard work and the more energy you waste on Settlers the harder the work becomes. Pioneers need to focus on enjoying the fruit of their labors rather than being worried about Settlers enjoying the same.

Moving an Organization Forward Through Headwinds of Change

We at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad are undertaking various initiatives to help the organization operate in the environment for the next 50 years. At 71 years and counting this organization has seen much change. The political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors have all changed continuously and that shows the resilience of our organization and the talent of our members. The Life members should be proud of their achievements as they reflect on the past and in light of the current situation. They left a stable and profitable organization for the next generation of fire and emergency medical services personnel.

Our People

The volunteers are a mix of young and old, experienced and inexperienced and we are a diverse group in every sense of the word. Each member plays their role with one prevailing attitude, we are here to serve others. When we put aside our differences and we focus on our universal need to serve others we thrive. We are proud to be associated with each other and we appreciate what each of us bring to the table. Recently we have had several members pass their EMT and National Registry. This will continue the cycle of service as they move from trainee to service provider.

Our Building

We have upgraded many parts of the facility to make the environment more enjoyable. We are considerate of our members physical needs as well as their health and safety. Sometimes it looks like a work zone when we replace the carpet, paint, receive new furniture, computers and associated work stations and more. We are even meeting with contractors to see the feasibility of extending the second floor to create a new bunkroom, offices and workout facility.

Our Apparatus

We have a robust apparatus replacement program so that we can employ the best technologies to operate in the hostile environments we respond to. We have also put new personnel in place to help us manage our apparatus maintenance program.

Our Time

We respect the time commitments of our members and provide the best training, educational opportunities, and benefits to ensure they feel respected for their service. We know our members could be doing many other things and we want them to have a healthy balance in their activities. Because we are the busiest company in the County we also know our member will have the experiences to provide services to those in need as often as they would want to participate.

We are here to meet the needs of all those who want to have a rewarding career in the fire and rescue services. We are located at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road in Suitland, Maryland. We have Drill Night on Mondays beginning at 7 pm. Come Join Us!!

Look into Johari’s Window – Self Help

It is described as the window to your soul. It may seem to be a minor theory but with close examination, if you are a Fire Service Leader, it is a concept you must grasp. As you stand in front of others and attempt to lead them, there are things you should know about yourself. Understanding yourself is the key to leading others. The objective is to learn as much as you can about yourself which enhances your self control. If you think you are fooling people then you need to think again. This is not about being overly concerned about what others think about you. This is mostly about the image you project and how it impacts your ability to lead.

If you are a paid leader then you have some things going for you that may help you overcome yourself when you get in your own way. Your formal authority will get you through most situations. As you rise through the ranks you need help and you need to ask others to help you see yourself as you are, or at best who you appear to be. Focus on understanding your self.

THE UNKNOWN SELF – There are things you are not aware of about yourself and that others do not know about you. Your habits, your idiosyncrasies, why you think the way you do and how you arrived at your point of view. The more you use self examination the smaller this window becomes and the better you can be at self improvement.

THE BLIND SPOT – Things people know about you but you are not aware of. If you record yourself while public speaking you may learn what others know about you that you wouldn’t know otherwise. When you are in conflict with another what are your facial expressions, when you get emotional how do you come accross? If you ask people their opinion about yourself, especially people you trust, you will make the blind spot smaller.

ARENA KNOWN TO SELF AND OTHERS – This is the ideal situation. Being transparent and predictable is the most potent position when it come to leadership. You want your subordinates to know how you would handle situations even when you are not around. This is the area in your life that you exercise the most effective self control.

MASK THE HIDDEN SELF – This defense mechanism is natural. We have to protect ourselves so we need to know our vulnerabilities. Learning why you put on a mask is important. To your own self be true. We make personal choices to expose ourselves to those we trust and somethings we find no one can be trusted. As long as we understand our motives that is the most important point in self examination.

We use management theory, principles and practices in our administrative and operational activities. Go to our Apply Now section and Join Us!!!! Come to 3900 Old Silver Hill Road on Mondays which is our training and drill night.
