Something Old Turns into Something New

At every event there are those whose past contributions stand out. Michael Stevens the heart and soul of the Apparatus Committee was recognized for his work with Patriot Fire to rehabilitate an old friend shown here. This legendary Seagrave Engine is the pride and joy of Silver Hill. Untold dollars were invested in restoring this unit and many thanks were showered upon Richard and Steve Beavers of Patriot Fire for their marvelous work.

Mike (Stevens) even got the family involved in shuttling the Seagrave to Patriot Fire the vendor on multiple occasions. The other Mike (Alfieri) put in road duty to see the project through. Jeff Kramer provided great video and pictures (shown here) to capture the glory of the refurbishment process. The craftsmanship is superb and a testament to the Beaver’s family dedication to near perfect work. The Silver Hill faithful were very appreciative of the care that went into the restoration. Michael Stevens is very dedicated to lending his expertise to the company and has run an excellent committee. Thank Mike for all that you do.

Thrill on the Hill 2

The team of Joe Diana and Matthew Fowler with the help of MC Mike Alfieri treated the Silver Hill faithful to food, folks and fun at the Seventy-fourth Annual Banquet on Saturday, July 13, 2019. The evening was filled with reminiscing, recognition, stories from Life Members and the fun and boisterous laughter of new members.

President Diana took on the role of recognizing his administrative staff and shared the exploits of his committee chairs. Chief Fowler lauded his operational team and shared his vision for the future. He also picked his Chief Officers and gave direction to the new members by providing an outline of his strategic plan.

Chief Fowler also highlighted new initiatives to bring in partners who can assist with the operational vision, mission, goals and objectives. It was an honor to have the Prince George’s County Fire Chief Benjamin Barksdale attend a portion of the event. A good time was had by all!

Increase Your Chance Of Getting Hired – Trade Your Time For Experience

If you want to increase your chances to become a paid firefighter, paramedic or emergency medical technician you need to volunteer. Think about it. Any job you apply for you know that the most qualified applicants have the best opportunity to be selected. Many college students who want to serve in the fire service trade their money for fire service knowledge. Then they take their knowledge on the road of life to get a job only to find out they lack the needed experience.

Many educated people ask themselves, how can I get job experience if I am not given an opportunity. But you should ask yourself, how can I get a job if I don’t take advantage of opportunities that give me experience? Why go through life complaining about not having opportunities in a profession that you know is lucrative and fulfilling when you can better position yourself to get the opportunities you seek by gaining experience.

Standing on the outside of a fire station wishing and hoping to get on the inside to get paid won’t change your opportunity. Going to college and paying for the training won’t give you experience. Save your money, volunteer, get the training and get experience you need to get hired. Maybe no one ever told you that you can get the training and the experience by volunteering. Many young people say they will not do anything for free because they want to get paid. Interestingly enough they go to college and pay to get training but gain no experience. Then year after year they are told they can’t get the job because they have no experience!

Why pay for knowledge and still not get experience? Try to use your mind and understand that there are very few opportunities in life you can get something for free. There is a cost for everything. The most abundant resource you have is time. We all get twenty four hours a day of free time. What you do with your time determines your quality of life. If being a fire service professional is what you want, volunteer your time in return for training, education and EXPERIENCE. Then when you go on the job interview you will have the knowledge and experience to get the job.

Stop by the Fire Station and learn what it takes to get the job you seek. Don’t just wish and pray, come in and talk to us! Fill out our application on this site and we will contact you.
