Before and After Shot. Nice to see new faces in the Fire House!
Ask yourself the following questions.
Do you feel a sense of being connected to those around you?
Do you think you should be connected to those around you?
Do you feel you can do something to help the people around you?
Do you see things happen and feel the urge to step in and help?
Do you step in and help but wish or know you could have been better at providing help?
When you see things happen (accident, injuries, fires, fear in people’s faces) do you wish you could help?
Are you even aware you can help people or do you miss events around you?
Are you sensitive to others?
Are you just concerned for yourself?
Are you the kind of person that stands in the crowd and gawks, stares and thinks, “What a shame?”
After reading those questions do you feel that you are being called by a force greater than yourself to get involved? Is there an fire or emergency medical organization in your community that you would like to be involved in but you do not know what steps to take to get involved?

We will be adding a new EMS Lieutenant and several new fire fighters to our ranks tonight. We also are adding two new Nationally registered EMTs. We cannot be more proud of our members. Frequently, we hear that fewer people want to volunteer their time as compared to years gone by. The unfortunate reality is that in years gone by people were appreciated more then, compared to now. People stop coming because their services were no longer appreciated and they were being pushed aside as a system that no longer had relevance.
We at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad care about our members and we value their service, we honor their service and we serve them. We would like those who have come to the Department and turned in their applications to stay vigilant to complete the process. It is a process, though arduous, is worth completing. Keep coming to our Drill Night on at 7 pm on Mondays were we meet at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road. Come Join Us!
We appreciate You!
We at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad are undertaking various initiatives to help the organization operate in the environment for the next 50 years. At 71 years and counting this organization has seen much change. The political, economic, social, technological, legal, and environmental factors have all changed continuously and that shows the resilience of our organization and the talent of our members. The Life members should be proud of their achievements as they reflect on the past and in light of the current situation. They left a stable and profitable organization for the next generation of fire and emergency medical services personnel.
The volunteers are a mix of young and old, experienced and inexperienced and we are a diverse group in every sense of the word. Each member plays their role with one prevailing attitude, we are here to serve others. When we put aside our differences and we focus on our universal need to serve others we thrive. We are proud to be associated with each other and we appreciate what each of us bring to the table. Recently we have had several members pass their EMT and National Registry. This will continue the cycle of service as they move from trainee to service provider.
We have upgraded many parts of the facility to make the environment more enjoyable. We are considerate of our members physical needs as well as their health and safety. Sometimes it looks like a work zone when we replace the carpet, paint, receive new furniture, computers and associated work stations and more. We are even meeting with contractors to see the feasibility of extending the second floor to create a new bunkroom, offices and workout facility.
We have a robust apparatus replacement program so that we can employ the best technologies to operate in the hostile environments we respond to. We have also put new personnel in place to help us manage our apparatus maintenance program.
We respect the time commitments of our members and provide the best training, educational opportunities, and benefits to ensure they feel respected for their service. We know our members could be doing many other things and we want them to have a healthy balance in their activities. Because we are the busiest company in the County we also know our member will have the experiences to provide services to those in need as often as they would want to participate.
We are here to meet the needs of all those who want to have a rewarding career in the fire and rescue services. We are located at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road in Suitland, Maryland. We have Drill Night on Mondays beginning at 7 pm. Come Join Us!!
We at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad are building an EMS Program. If you like working in EMS with a team then you need to come to 3900 Old Silver Hill Road in Suitland Maryland. This program will be none other because those involved will be involved in a Strategic Planning Program that build a state of the art system.
Our goal is to build a system similar to the Boston EMS System. We plan to have a separate facility that houses EMS Providers and we need people to help us build that. Through our fundraising capability we can afford to move EMS operations out of the fire station. While we have plenty of capacity we need visionary personnel who want to build something. We no longer to stick EMS in a building designed for firefighters. We want EMS personnel to help design the facility for the future that suits their needs.
The first step in the process is to obtain housing that has as its purpose to have a facility that takes into consideration our members health and well being. Members should not be sleeping in a fire station unless they are running calls. By having duty shifts everyone’s well being is protected.
We don’t want members to come to the station and work in the traditional model and run calls until their brains turn to mush. We are also creating supervisory positions and administrative positions that serve the needs of our members. We are obtaining state of the art units so our members can be comfortable while providing services. Our cots are motorized to protect the health of our members aimed at ensuring their longevity in the system. We want our members to meet the requirements of LOSAP (retirement program) and having the best equipment to ride on is a must. We have two ambulances and are in the process of purchasing a new one.
The reason we raise funds is to invest in our members. We provide training opportunities, send our members to conferences and other venues to ensure they build their skills to provide the highest quality possible. This is why we are always appealing to those who visit our website to “Join Us’. We know their are only a few stations that can do what we do for our people. Our Live-In program is focused on training and preparing our members for service. Our members will be competitive for jobs in the Fire and EMS Services because we invest in them first. This is a covenant relationship with our members. If you serve the public then we will serve you.
Because we put our members first we operate in a way that is considerate of your time. We don’t drive our members into the ground. We have shifts designed to meet your needs. We keep the meaning of volunteer simple. Part of volunteering means respecting the voluntary aspect of the system. Because we honor the Length of Service Award Program goals we allow our members to decide if they want to reach the retirement goals as a volunteer. By fulfilling the time requirements you can earn a retirement but if you don’t want to focus on our retirement program that is a choice you can make.
Come to our drill night on Mondays at 7 pm and learn how to become a part of our EMS Strategic Planning Process. Bring your skills to 3900 Old Silver Hill Road in Suitland and Join Us!
