Those Who Make Things Happen and Those That Complain

The Pioneers and the Settlers (In The Goldilocks Zone)

There are a lot of Pioneers in the Fire and Rescue Services that are criticized by those who are on the sidelines (Settlers) waiting for things to get done. These Settlers are not bad people, they just don’t have the talent to make things happen. You know who they are. They come into your home, complain about the chairs either being too soft or too hard. They complain about the food either being too hot or too cold. They complain about the beds either being too hard or too soft. We get that they want things to be just right but they don’t do their part to help make things just right.

To all the Settlers out there, and you know who you are, no one made things just right for the Pioneers. The Pioneers build the company, buy the apparatus, acquire the equipment, fix the facilities and work hard to make things just right. Pioneers have faced more dangerous things than the criticism of Settlers. Pioneers know the truth about the situation. They continue the work knowing the Settlers will always only be concerned about their comfort. So it comes down to perspective.

Pioneering is hard work and the more energy you waste on Settlers the harder the work becomes. Pioneers need to focus on enjoying the fruit of their labors rather than being worried about Settlers enjoying the same.

Are You Fire Fighter or Emergency Medical Technician Material?

Ask yourself the following questions.

Do you feel a sense of being connected to those around you?

Do you think you should be connected to those around you?

Do you feel you can do something to help the people around you?

Do you see things happen and feel the urge to step in and help?

Do you step in and help but wish or know you could have been better at providing help?

When you see things happen (accident, injuries, fires, fear in people’s faces) do you wish you could help?

Are you even aware you can help people or do you miss events around you?

Are you sensitive to others?

Are you just concerned for yourself?

Are you the kind of person that stands in the crowd and gawks, stares and thinks, “What a shame?”

After reading those questions do you feel that you are being called by a force greater than yourself to get involved? Is there an fire or emergency medical organization in your community that you would like to be involved in but you do not know what steps to take to get involved?

If you would like to know more about how you can get involved fill out the “Apply Now” application on this website. We are here to help you get started on a career that will last a lifetime. Don’t let your desire to be trained to give back to your community fade. Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today. Send us that message and we will help you do the rest. Come to our Drill Nights which happen every Monday 7 pm at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road in Suitland. Come Join Us!!!

Tonight We Celebrate – Badge Pinning Ceremony

We will be adding a new EMS Lieutenant and several new fire fighters to our ranks tonight. We also are adding two new Nationally registered EMTs. We cannot be more proud of our members. Frequently, we hear that fewer people want to volunteer their time as compared to years gone by. The unfortunate reality is that in years gone by people were appreciated more then, compared to now. People stop coming because their services were no longer appreciated and they were being pushed aside as a system that no longer had relevance.

We at the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad care about our members and we value their service, we honor their service and we serve them. We would like those who have come to the Department and turned in their applications to stay vigilant to complete the process. It is a process, though arduous, is worth completing. Keep coming to our Drill Night on at 7 pm on Mondays were we meet at 3900 Old Silver Hill Road. Come Join Us!

We appreciate You!
