What You Need To Know About Active Shooter Incidents

We call them Active Shooters but they are Active Killers. You may know someone who has the potential to become an Active Killer and you have a responsibility to notify law enforcement. We saw with the Ohio mass shooting the perpetrator shot his own sister in the crowd. No one is safe when an Active Killer strikes in the community. If you see a sudden change in behavior in someone like depression and they talk about harming others and have access to weapons you should get them some help.

Law enforcement have to change their response objectives to stop the Active Killers. They have to go to the sound of the gunfire and take action. Learn First aid skills so you can help your family if one of them gets injured in an event. Get out of the building if you hear gun fire in the opposite direction. Don’t try to find out if the shooting is real or you see evidence of the shooter. If you think you hear gunfire head for the exits! Don’t just run look for the exits and the exit signs. If you can’t get out then look for a place to hide. If you are in the crowd and you can’t escape and you have no choice try to get others to help you fight.

Learn how to survive. The actions you take in this type of event has to be in your subconscious mind called unconscious competence. You have to know what to do cold. Take an active part in your survival. Don’t just wait for someone to come and help you if at all possible. Go to websites that teach surviving an active shooter events like fema.gov
