William H. (Buddy) King
My initiation into the fire service began when I joined the Oxon Hill Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter in December 1966.
In July 1970, I transferred to the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department. I have held every position in this department from Fire Fighter to
Fire Chief. As of January 1, 2005, I was elected to serve as Fire Chief once again. I currently hold active life membership in this department.
As an active member of the Prince Georges' County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association I have served as First Vice President, Second Vice President,
and Fire Commissioner and on the Board of Directors. In September 1996, I was nominated and selected to the Prince Georges' County Volunteer Fire
and Rescue Association Hall of Fame. This was truly an honor for my family and me.
My federal fire service career began on the 13 August 1973, when I was hired as a fire fighter for the Naval Communications Unit Fire Department in
Cheltenham, Maryland. In March 1978, I was selected and promoted as a Fire Captain at the David W. Taylor Naval Ship and Research Center in Carderock
Maryland. After serving in this position for a year, I was promoted and held the position of Fire Chief from October 1980 to August 1986. At the end
of that year, the Naval District Washington Consolidated Fire Department selected me to be the Assistant Fire Chief of the Fire Prevention Division
in Washington, DC. September 1989 brought another career move as I was selected and promoted to the position of Deputy Fire Chief of Operations for
the Consolidated Fire Departments at Dahlgren, Va. and White Oak, Maryland. In November 1989, I was promoted as Fire Chief for both fire departments.
I held this position until September 1991 when both Commanding Officers' from Dahlgren and White Oak agreed that it would be beneficial if the fire
departments were separated. In September 1991, I was offered the position as Fire Chief at the White Oak Fire Department and served until the fire
department closed under BRAC in August 1997. My career path led to my accepting the Fire Chiefs position at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Fire
and Emergency Services Division in Albany, Georgia. I held that position from June 1998 until December 2000. This leads to my current position as
Assistant Fire Chief for the Naval District Washington Fire and Emergency Services Fire Prevention Division.
My entire family is also involved in the fire service. My wife Debbie was an active life member until her passing in June of 2000.
My three sons are also heavily involved in the Prince George’s County Fire Service. My son Anthony is a chief officer here at Silver Hill VFD,
and works as a career captain at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. Curtis is a member here and Dunkirk VFD in Calvert County.
Curtis works in emergency services as an Emergency Services Communications Specialist. Steven is a member at Bunker Hill (Formally Brentwood VFD Co. 4).
He also works as an Emergency Services Communications Specialist for the Naval District of Washington Fire and Emergency Services.
